Starting Over When the Plan Fell Apart – By Theclapaul Richardson

What do you do when the life you planned suddenly falls apart? A deeply personal reflection on navigating disappointment, uncertainty and the difficult—but hopeful—process of starting over.

Jamaica, Trinidad

I went to the Cayman Islands knowing that there would be a work permit awaiting my arrival. But to my surprise, the permit was given to the loved one of the person who had promised to provide it for me. What made the situation even more difficult was that this person was also a close relative of mine.

I felt betrayed and defeated, and I needed some time to recalibrate. After a brief moment of feeling sorry for myself, I knew that I had to try to help myself. I started sending out my résumé and applying for all the job opportunities that best suited my skill set.

I prayed and waited for a response. Thankfully, I received a call from one of the companies I had applied to. That experience showed me just how resilient I am and taught me the importance of not giving up.
