Becoming Her Own Hero – By Rachel Bernard

What happens when the person you’ve been waiting to save you never comes?

RACHEL BERNARD

Trinidad

When people ask me when I realised I needed to become my own hero, I always go back to my teenage years and my first heartbreak.

It was one of the hardest seasons of my life. My self-esteem was at an all-time low. I struggled to sleep, I lost my appetite, and I started seeing myself through a very negative lens. I vividly remember standing in front of the mirror and not recognising the confident young woman I once was. Looking back now, I realise that was the beginning of everything.

During that season, I came to understand that while people could support me, the work of healing had to come from within. That realisation changed everything. It was the first time I consciously chose to take responsibility for my own healing and growth, and it became the first chapter in my journey of becoming my own hero.
